Categories of World Robot Olympiad

RoboMission (Regular)
The difficult Regular is the most popular category among participating teams. In this category, students build their robots on the day of the competition, making on-the-fly programming changes depending on a surprise rule they discover during the Olympiad.
The Robo Mission category is organised around a specific topic and a competitive track. Each time, teams must design, build, and programme a robot to match the requirements of the assigned task. For instance, the robot could be instructed to collect cubes of a given colour or other things of a specific colour or shape.
The Robo Mission category is divided into three age groups (primary school, middle school, and high school). Each category or age level participates in its own problem and competition track, with a difficulty level that is varied based on age.
Age: Primary School: 8-12 | Middle School: 11-15 | High School: 14-19
Team: 2-3 individuals with 1 coach
Equipment: LEGO®
Software: Free
Maximum Construction Size: Max. 25 x 25 x 25 cm

Future Innovators (Open)
The Open category is always based on a specific theme. Participating teams must design, create, and programme robotic systems inspired by and centred on this theme.
Teams get the opportunity to showcase their inventions and explain the reasoning, utility, and significance of their designs for the competition’s specific topic. To ensure fair competition, the Open category is separated into three age groups: Primary School, Middle School, and High School.
*In the international final WRO, teams predominantly employing LEGO controllers have the opportunity to earn the LEGO Education Creativity Award.

Future Engineers
This specific challenge is aimed at students aged 14-19. The WRO Future Engineers category is an autonomous car driving competition. Participants will design a car model, equip it with electromechanical components, and program it to autonomously navigate a track while avoiding obstacles.

Maximum Construction Size: Max. 30 x 20 x 30 cm
Robo Sports
Small changes are made to the game each year to encourage students to continue developing their robots.
For the first time in 2022, the competition includes the thrilling new game “Double Tennis,” which will eventually replace WRO Football.
